Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and-if he has his way-every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart. -- (C) Warner Bros

New Trailer For Gangster Squad

Review For Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad looks the part, but it's so superficial it practically evaporates before our eyes.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

Some of the clothes and makeup feel as glossy as paint, but, those aside, we seem to browsing through a display of secondhand goods.
Anthony Lane-New Yorker

It might sound like a stretch, imagining Penn playing that intense, indiosyncratic a villain. But the lauded, veteran actor pulls a left hook, then a right, and after a wild bodyshot at the tail end of the film, you see the true mania behind his eyes.
Ricardo Baca-Denver Post

Director Ruben Fleischer and screenwriter Will Beall can't decide whether to make a spoof or a serious drama, so they wrongheadedly attempt both.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Gangster Squad" is a highly stylized, pulp-fiction period piece based on true events.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

Despite a cast of gifted actors, lush 1940s production design and suave costumes, it's bereft of inspiration, plowing familiar terrain past the point of tedium to impatience.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

The film is never anything less than watchable, largely because of its seductively stylish look and bevy of charismatic actors.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

"Gangster Squad" is like "The Untouchables" without a heart. De Palma delivered the goods on Ness and company. The goods were hijacked in this gangster tale.
Paul Chambers-Movie Chambers

Although it's blunt and brisk in its own inoffensive way, "Gangster Squad" is meathead cinema - the sort that cuts hard from a splattered brain to spatula-pressed hamburger. Unlike that grilled patty, the movie is mostly sizzle, little steak.
Nick Rogers-Suite101.com

Makes 1991′s "Mobsters" look like "The Godfather" in comparison.
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

Ruben Fleischer's Gangster Squad attempts to recreate mobster magic, but ends up fumbling into an endless amount of clichés and some horrid digital photography to boot.
Jeremy Lebens-We Got This Covered

While pretty and often entertaining, Gangster Squad's a violent urban western that gets lost in the fog of homage.
Sara Maria Vizcarrondo-Movies With Butter

Those looking for the depth and complexity of the best of the genre are in the wrong place, but take Gangster Squad for what it is and it's not a bad way to spend an evening.
Joshua Starnes-ComingSoon.net

Do not try to fight off the running "this is the City of Angels" commentary; you will lose. Here, the good guys win, the bad guys earn their comeuppance, the dames look pretty and the dopey dialogue shoves a grapefruit in your face and shuts you up.
Dave White-Movies.com

The end result is a passable - just barely - thriller that benefits substantially from the efforts of its star-heavy cast...
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

Gangster Squad verges on a parody of hard-boiled noir in the vein of the Scary Movie/Date Movie/Epic Movie films, only with real A-list star power; it's a funny old mixture.
Catherine Bray-Film4

A violent and cartoonish take on the '40s gangster scene in LA.
Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground

It should all be a lot more fun than it is, or at least as rollicking as "Zombieland," Fleischer's clever 2009 outing. Some pious soul-searching near the end is altogether insufferable.
Greg Evans-Bloomberg News

Mistura de Os Intocáveis, Los Angeles - Cidade Proibida e Scooby-Doo.
Pablo Villaca-Cinema em Cena

It's fitting that 'Gangster' Squad deals with crime because charging admission to this torpid film is robbery.
Dan Lybarger-KC Active

Will it win any awards for 2013? Well, no. But 'Gangster Squad,' a shoot-'em-up nod to pulp thrillers, will provide solid entertainment for fans of crime dramas.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

In spite of heavy gunfire, Gangster Squad misses
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

All style and pose devoid of soul.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Comes off as a hollow masquerade, play-acting at machismo for nearly two hours. Along with the furniture tossed in fits of rage, there are empty flourishes of neo-noir style, rote action sequences, and little danger for our hardboiled heroes.
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

Brash, loud & risibly anachronistic, Gangster Squad is flashier than a mobster's suit, but if you're not too fussy about finesse then this stylised crime film is a hugely entertaining cops 'n crooks romp through a cartoon-like version of 1940s LA history.

A paraplegic ex-marine finds a new life on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious digital 3D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a war veteran who gets called to the depths of space to pick up the job of his slain twin brother for the scientific arm of a megacorporation looking to mine the planet of Pandora for a valued ore. Unfortunately the biggest deposit of the prized substance lies underneath the home of the Na'vi, a ten-foot-tall, blue-skinned native tribe who have been at war with the security arm of the company, lead by Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Because of the planet's hostile atmosphere, humans have genetically grown half-alien/half-human bodies which they can jack their consciousnesses into and explore the world in. Since Jake's brother already had an incredibly expensive Avatar grown for him, he's able to connect with it using the same DNA code and experience first-hand the joys of Pandora while giving the scientific team, led by Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore), some well-needed protection against the planet's more hostile forces. On a chance meeting after getting separated from his team, Jake's Avatar is rescued by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a Na'vi princess, who brings him into her tribe in order to give the humans a second chance at relating to this new environment. When word gets out of his increasing time with the alien species, Quaritch enlists Jake to do some reconnaissance for the company, as they'd like to persuade the tribe to move their home before taking more drastic measures to harness the treasure hidden below. Yet as Jake becomes one with the tribe and begins to understand the secrets of Pandora, his conscience is torn between his new adopted world and the wheelchair-bound one awaiting him when the psychic connection to his Avatar is broken. Soon battle lines are drawn and Jake needs to decide which side he will fight on when the time comes. The film was shot on the proprietary FUSION digital 3D cameras developed by Cameron in collaboration with Vince Pace, and offers a groundbreaking mix of live-action dramatic performances and computer-generated effects. The revolutionary motion-capture system created for the film allows the facial expressions of actors to be captured as a virtual camera system enables them to see what their computer-generated counterparts will be seeing in the film, and Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Weta Digital visual-effects house supervises Avatar's complex special effects. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

Review For Avatar

Cameron's 'Avatar': Brainy & Beautiful
Joe Baltake-Passionate Moviegoer

The narrative would be ho-hum without the spectacle. But what spectacle! Avatar is dizzying, enveloping, vertiginous ... I ran out of adjectives an hour into its 161 minutes.
David Edelstein-New York Magazine

I had the feeling coming out of this movie that I haven't felt since maybe I was eleven years old in 1977 and I saw Star Wars for the first time.
A.O. Scott-At the Movies

It's a remote-control movie experience, a high-tech "wish you were here" scribbled on a very expensive postcard.
Stephanie Zacharek-Salon.com

The most-hyped movie of the year just about merits it.
Amy Biancolli-San Francisco Chronicle

Big money, big risk, pretty big reward. That's been his consistent pattern, and it's high time to give credit where credit is overdue: James Cameron delivers.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

Avatar showed me something I have never seen before. It reminded me of what movies can do, of what they're capable of, of what the experience of sitting down for three hours in a dark room can really mean.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

Cameron's $300 million baby is nothing but a 5- and 10-cent snore.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

This sci-fi epic would be a masterpiece if judged solely on its technical merits.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Cameron is flexing his creative muscles, but the film never overcomes the nagging feeling that he's also simply going through the motions.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Piercing the hype, Avatar may not be a "game changer", but I'll be damned if the game didn't just get a hell of a lot more interesting from here on in.
Ali Gray-TheShiznit.co.uk

While it wasn't the most original narrative, it serves the film well, even if it was merely a template for Cameron to show us this gorgeous world and its landscapes.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

Planet Pandora's plant and animal life is done with a wonder that has been often absent from fiction screens.
Donald J. Levit-ReelTalk Movie Reviews

It's both wildly original and hauntingly familiar, like Dances With Wolves in a galaxy far, far away.
Neil Pond-American Profile

It is far too long and the romance is half-hearted. Still, you'd have to travel very far to feel so fully immersed in another world.
Stella Papamichael-Digital Spy

It's good. It should have been better.
Widgett Walls-Needcoffee.com

It may not change the world, but it'll certainly provide enjoyment to many millions of people all over it.
Mike Edwards-What Culture

As a fantasy epic, Avatar is an undeniable victory ... but outside of the narrow confines of immersion he's managed, it's also quite limited.
Joshua Starnes-ComingSoon.net

The nature scenes are nothing short of magical in this film.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

Spiritually moving, visually daring and emotionally stirring, Avatar is classic storytelling at its very best.
R. L. Shaffer-IGN DVD

"Avatar" looks amazing on Blu-ray. If the plot wasn't so pedestrian, it could have been a great film. Paul Chambers, CNN.
Paul Chambers-CNNRadio

If you ever wondered what a live-action Hayao Miyazaki film would look like, Avatar is a damn good approximation.
Jeff Meyers-Metro Times (Detroit, MI)

You can feel Cameron's anger and his passion every time a Na'vi roars. The most exhilarating moments are those when you can feel the director urging his actors to let go completely, to become furious, and to unleash hell.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

For all the justifiable knocks on James Cameron's writing, his personal investment in any project is never in doubt. With "Avatar," his passion for pushing the very possibilities of film as a medium pays off. Here's hoping we see him again before 2021.
Nick Rogers-Suite101.com

Avatar is a joyous celebration of story craft and the visual possibilities of cinema. Cameron had set his sights on taking the technology of film where no one had gone before. And he delivers. Avatar is stunning. Cameron and Peter Jackson's Weta Digital h

With sly humor and an intensity of feeling, THE SPECTACULAR NOW (directed by James Ponsoldt) creates a vivid, three-dimensional portrait of youth confronting the funny, thrilling and perilous business of modern love and adulthood. This is the tale of Sutter Keely (Miles Teller), a high school senior and effortless charmer, and of how he unexpectedly falls in love with "the good girl" Aimee Finecky (Shailene Woodley). What starts as an unlikely romance becomes a sharp-eyed, straight-up snapshot of the heady confusion and haunting passion of youth - one that doesn't look for tidy truths. The film was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (500) DAYS OF SUMMER and also features wonderful supporting turns from Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. New Trailer For The Spectacular Now

Review For The Spectacular Now

"The Spectacular Now" wins a lot of points for avoiding conventional scenes
Jordan Hoffman-Film.com

A sincere, refreshingly unaffected look at teenagers and their attitudes about the future.
Todd McCarthy-Hollywood Reporter

The Spectacular Now does not come close to earning that certain kind of isolation that teenagers feel, certainly never coming close to equaling the year in Charlie's 'Wallflower' existence.
Erik Childress-Film Threat

Young adulthood is rarely portrayed with such conviction, in a manner that connects with both its core teen audience and a wider adult demographic.
Ed Gibbs-Guardian [UK]

A star-making part for Miles Teller. Along with PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, one of the best coming of age movies of our generation. John Hughes would be proud.
Chris Bumbray-JoBlo's Movie Emporium

Written by the screenwriters of (500) Days of Summer, the film injects some hard-won poignancy into the tale of a young man wavering on the precipice of adulthood.
Anthony Kaufman-Screen International

The most important adult-oriented film about the victories and woes of high school life in the last decade.
Chase Whale-Twitch
